Higher Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) in Oil & Gas Downstream Operations- Part One: Decreasing CapEx

Image
A key challenge facing Oil & Gas executives is how to justify funding of downstream technology modernization projects. Most executives have traditionally only considered outlay of capital for installation and the ongoing cost of maintenance. In fact, an overlooked ratio, Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), provides a more comprehensive and accurate method for calculating efficiency and profitability of a company’s capital investments. ROCE represents the percentage return that a company makes over its invested capital, a measure of the profitability and value-creating potential after taking into account the amount of initial capital invested. The ROCE ratio is expressed as Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) / Capital Employed. Thus, ROCE can serve as a useful metric for calculating efficiency and profitability and can help determine how to squeeze a higher return out of corporate capital investments. The topic of industrial plant modernization represents a critical success ...

The Edge Computing Definition is a Work in Progress, but Its Importance to the Data Center Market is Indisputable

Image
No matter how much has been written about edge computing , how many presentations given or panels held, the definition of edge is still a talking point. That’s where we started during the Data Center Austin Conference (DCAC) where I hosted a discussion with Ty Schmitt, VP and Fellow of Extreme Scale Infrastructure, Dell EMC, and Sharif Fotouh, Founder & CEO, Compass EdgePoint. Why can’t we agree on what edge means ? While there’s value to speaking in common terms, Schmitt thinks we shouldn’t try to define it. Though it’s human nature to want to put parameters and classifications around technology to solve a specific problem, in this case he believes the open-ended nature of edge is what makes it full of possibilities for the data center market . “The lack of definition or consistency comes with massive opportunity,” he explained. “We should embrace the unknowns. That’s where we find opportunity galore. If edge was a constant, we wouldn’t be talking about it, and there’d be n...

The importance of network connectivity in home automation

Technological applications are at an all-time high – anyone in today’s day-and-age knows exactly what we’re talking about when we make this statement. It’s genuinely amazing to witness the prevalence of modern technology and how it is affecting us in our day-to-day lives. This has reached a point where it has become close to impossible to even think about a world which isn’t technologically advanced. Facilitating such an environment has helped propel the notion of home automation becoming the norm in today’s day-and-age. However, to say that this form of technology will become universal in the coming years is an incredibly short-sighted statement to make – the fact of the matter is that there are still many forms of technology that need to become commonplace before one can even think that home automation can become a universally applicable form of technology. To meet these challenges, the concept of network connectivity can play a major role. Making sure that all the processes invol...

EFF: Facebook Warns Memphis Police: No More Fake “Bob Smith” Accounts

Facebook Warns Memphis Police: No More Fake “Bob Smith” Accounts Facebook has a problem: an infestation of undercover cops. Despite the social platform’s explicit rules that the use of fake profiles by anyone—police included—is a violation of terms of service, the issue proliferates. While the scope is difficult to measure, EFF has identified scores of agencies who maintain policies that explicitly flaunt these rules. Hopefully—and perhaps this is overly optimistic—this is about to change, with a new warning Facebook has sent to the Memphis Police Department. The company has also updated its law enforcement guidelines to highlight the prohibition on fake accounts. This summer, the criminal justice news outlet  The Appeal  reported on an alarming detail revealed in a civil rights lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Tennessee against the Memphis Police Department. The lawsuit uncovered evidence that the police used what they referred to as a “Bob Smith” account to befriend and ga...
