EFF: When ISPs Tell Seniors Net Neutrality Laws Will Increase Their Bills, They’re Lying and Losing

When ISPs Tell Seniors Net Neutrality Laws Will Increase Their Bills, They’re Lying and Losing The fight to secure net neutrality protections for Californians keeps showing how far ISPs and their surrogates will go to make a buck off of ending the free and open Internet. The latest maneuver is a flood of deceptive robocalls targeting seniors and stating that net neutrality will raise their cell phone bills by $30 a month and slow down the Internet . It’s not just a lie, it’s proof that you’ve successfully put them on the defensive by contacting your representatives about net neutrality. The robocalls don’t mention net neutrality by name. Instead, they simply assert that S.B. 822 will raise their bills and slow down their Internet. If ISPs decided to make this true by coordinating to raise prices in reaction to net neutrality legislation it would probably be illegal under federal antitrust law. There is no evidence that says net neutrality harms ISPs to the point where they must r...

EFF: Back to School Essentials for Security

Back to School Essentials for Security Going back to school? This is a perfect time for a digital security refresh to ensure the privacy of you and your friends is protected! It’s a good time to change your passwords . The best practice is to have passwords that are unique, long, and random. In order to keep track of these unique, long and random passwords, consider downloading a password manager . As a great additional measure: You can add login  notifications to your accounts, so that you can monitor logins from devices you don’t recognize. If you’re a regular user of a public computer, like at the school library or lab, keep in mind that public computers can remember information from your logins. Adding two factor authentication to your accounts is a great way to bolster your security. Adding a second factor in addition to your unique, long, and random password makes it much harder for someone else to access your account . There are many types of two factor ...

Embarking on the digitization journey in mining: think strategy first, technology second

Image
The World Economic Forum in January 2017 highlighted that digitization in the mining industry has the potential to deliver over $425 billion in shareholder, customer and environmental value by 2025.  Much of this value will come in the form of optimized operational effectiveness, increased productivity, and enhanced safety. However, with increased opportunity comes inherent uncertainty, and Ernst & Young has identified digital effectiveness as the top risk currently facing the mining and metals sector. Realizing the value of digitization requires strategic planning, strong industrial partnerships, realignment of culture, and appropriate selection and deployment of digitization technologies. Most mining companies are either actively engaged or in the process of evaluating how best to optimize their operations by leveraging digitization to drive efficiencies and remain competitive. Many however have yet to travel very far down the digitization path and are uncertain on where ...

Smart Load Monitoring Helps University of Lille Reduce Energy Consumption

Image
Located in northern France, the University of Lille is spread across six campuses and hosts more than 110,000 students. As one of several modernization initiatives, the university made the decision to move its political science department to a new, state-of-the-art building equipped with a new, modern Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Building Operation building management system (BMS). Jean-Francois Baton, campus relocation manager saw the move as an opportunity to improve energy efficiency and energy consumption awareness. Most university campuses create few incentives to encourage students, staff and faculty to adopt energy efficient habits. Yet, the lighting, heating and powering of classrooms, lecture halls, offices, laboratories and dormitory rooms together account for over 60% of energy use in university campus settings. According to Baton, “In the past, we had no means for collecting information about our energy consumption. We were completely passive.” Solving the cost/effici...

Digitizing your critical power system: simple, smart and stable

Image
In my last post , I talked about the difficulties faced by facility teams in keeping critical power facilities running safety, reliably, efficiently, and compliant with regulations. We looked at the many hidden risks that make these goals even more challenging. A fully digitized electrical power distribution system gives you the deep insights you need so you’re no longer ‘working blind’. In this post, we’ll have a look at the specific digital technologies that can help you achieve your continuity and efficiency goals faster, while making your job easier. Digitization is everywhere Just about every aspect of our lives has become digitized. Consider the vehicle you drive. If you have a fairly recent model, every aspect of its operation is monitored, displayed and, in some cases, controlled automatically. These advances are making driving safer, more reliable, more efficient, and compliant with regulations like emissions standards. It’s also making driving easier and more enjoyable. ...
