EFF: EFF Enters the Competition Fray: 2019 Year in Review

EFF Enters the Competition Fray: 2019 Year in Review None of us signed up for an Internet composed of “a group of five websites, each consisting of screenshots of text from the other four” , but here we are, watching as hyper-concentrated industries rack up catastrophic victories against net neutrality , right to repair , security auditing , and a host of other issues. These gains come at the expense of the public interest, and endanger the public interest Internet: the parts of the net that let anyone, anywhere collaborate with anyone, anywhere without permission from someone who has interposed themselves between them. They represent a triumph of lobbying over evidence, and such lobbying is only possible because the industries behind it are so fantastically concentrated that their top executives literally fit around a modest boardroom table . In 2019, EFF became part of a global movement to restore competition to our markets. Our competition work cuts across so many of the issu...

EFF: Victories and Disappointments in AI and Algorithmic Decision-Making: 2019 Year in Review

Victories and Disappointments in AI and Algorithmic Decision-Making: 2019 Year in Review AI and algorithmic decision-making raised important civil liberties issues in 2019, with developments good, bad, and in-between. Starting off in the “disappointing” category, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced in August that it was considering new rules that would insulate landlords, banks, and insurance companies that use algorithmic models from lawsuits over discriminatory impacts. In response, we told HUD that their proposal was seriously flawed and sought to educate them about the ways that machine learning and other algorithmic tools work in practice. Far from being intrinsically neutral, these tools must be approached very carefully to avoid entrenching and concealing historical discrimination. HUD’s proposed affirmative defenses are dangerous, inconsistent with how machine learning actually works, and would upend enforcement of the Fair Housing Act...

Datacloud Global Congress 2019: Focused on Next Generation DCIM, AI, and Edge Computing

Image
Thought leaders across the IT infrastructure ecosystem gather each spring in Monaco for Datacloud Congress , which officially provides a forum where ideas are exchanged and connections are made. Unofficially, Datacloud is the annual gathering where industry’s top “heavyweights” debate the future of the data center publicly on stage. Then privately, they continue conversations into the evening aboard yachts docked in Monte Carlo Harbor and in restaurants perched high above it. Schneider Electric’s Kevin Brown kicked off this year’s event with the opening keynote: The Multi-Billion-Dollar Success that Wasn’t: DCIM and the Evolution of Data Center Management , which was thought provoking, reflective and predictive. Brown, SVP and CTO for the Secure Power Division, explained how the industry had predicted Data Center Infrastructure Management ( DCIM ) would be a 3-7 billion euro market a decade ago, but it didn’t materialize. Expectations were inflated and customers experienced complicat...

Getting the Most Bang for Your Buck with Data Center Modernization

Image
Ten years ago, the iPad didn’t exist, we connected via a 3G network , and Gartner put cloud in its hype cycle . Clearly, much has changed including data center technology. But as assets age, it’s hard to know where to prioritize your data center modernization efforts to get the most bang for your buck. I explored this topic during a webinar hosted by IDG, Optimizing Data Center Revenue, Cost & Risk. If you are building a new data center, you should be deploying a cost and risk optimized solution. However, if you have an aging data center, you are likely not operating at the same efficiency and risk profile as a new data center being deployed today. This places you at a competitive disadvantage. The big question you should be asking is – how should I modernize my data center to improve costs and reduce risk? Essentially, there are three areas of focus for data center modernization : equipment (electrical and mechanical infrastructure), systems (EPMS, BMS, DCIM) and operations (op...

Powerful Confusion! The Differences Between 4.5G, Pre5G, and 5G Explained

Image
People sometimes ask me – “When is 5G going to take over for 3G and 4G?” I answer with a not so famous quote from a very underrated actor, Ricardo Montalbán in the role of Kahn from 1982’s Star Trek II, The Wrath of Kahn, “Oh, not all at once, and not instantly for sure.” I admit it’s not as catchy as Mr. Spock’s “live long and prosper” from the same film but it sums it up. 5G , or what carriers will call 5G, will come in stages, as will increases in performance. These carriers understand the hype cycle and are looking to capitalize on this perceived “need for speed” (says very overrated actor Tom Cruise as Maverick in Top Gun, 1986). AT&T is one of the first to say it has 5G already with “5G Evolution” and the company has modified its phones to display a “5G E” connection. AT&T’s web site says : “5G Evolution is our first step on the road to 5G. We’re starting by enabling faster speeds on our existing LTE network—up to 2x faster than standard LTE.” So, this isn’t actual 5G,...

How Lenders and Financial Institutions Fund Colocation Data Center Expansion

Image
As technology trends such as cloud and edge computing become more influential in the way global companies conduct their business, the role of the  colocation  data center becomes even more critically important. Today, most blue-chip businesses turn to colocation data centers to help manage much of their cloud and edge computing data processing needs. 451 Research projects  that global colocation and wholesale market revenue will top $48bn by 2021. This remarkable growth is resulting from the convergence of three major influencers: A data hungry world where governments, businesses, and consumers show an increasing appetite for gathering, processing, and storing data of all kinds. Data center operators who provide facilities, sometimes on a hyperscale level, that house and manage all of the technology needed to sustain the global flow of data. Financing institutions who lend the funds to the data center operators in order for them to both establish...
