EFF: Victory! The House of Representatives Passes Net Neutrality Protections

Victory! The House of Representatives Passes Net Neutrality Protections In a vote of 232-190, the House of Representatives passed the Save the Internet Act (H.R. 1644). This is a major step forward in the fight for net neutrality protections, and it’s because you spoke up about what you want. The Save the Internet Act was written to restore the strong and hard-fought protections of the 2015 Open Internet Order. Americans overwhelmingly support an Internet where Internet service providers (ISPs) have to treat all the data transmitted over their networks in a nondiscriminatory way. In other words, where ISPs don’t act as gatekeepers to the Internet and where you, the user, decide how and what you want to see online. As many Americans have no choice when it comes to their ISP , it is vital that they retain control over their online experience. 4 Key Differences Between SCADA and Industrial IoT

The Industrial Internet of Things has played a noteworthy role in enhancing the functions of remote monitoring. While most companies have already implemented SCADA systems for this purpose, the Industrial Internet of Things has gradually replaced its functions. Let us evaluate the contrast between the two systems. Device Interconnectivity   When implementing SCADA systems , unifying devices that are created by distinct manufacturers is a close to impossible task. Additionally, when the devices are developed by the same manufacturer, it can be difficult to use them interchangeably as their model may vary. They also require a horizontal program that can function across a host of devices, irrespective of their producer or model. Now when we evaluate IIoT, the system depends on the notion of interconnectivity. The primary motive of this is to facilitate communication across numerous devices. Nothing is dependant on the model or maker of the appliances. It uses procedures like MQTT ...

Powerful Confusion! The Differences Between 4.5G, Pre5G, and 5G Explained

People sometimes ask me – “When is 5G going to take over for 3G and 4G?” I answer with a not so famous quote from a very underrated actor, Ricardo Montalbán in the role of Kahn from 1982’s Star Trek II, The Wrath of Kahn, “Oh, not all at once, and not instantly for sure.” I admit it’s not as catchy as Mr. Spock’s “live long and prosper” from the same film but it sums it up. 5G , or what carriers will call 5G, will come in stages, as will increases in performance. These carriers understand the hype cycle and are looking to capitalize on this perceived “need for speed” (says very overrated actor Tom Cruise as Maverick in Top Gun, 1986). AT&T is one of the first to say it has 5G already with “5G Evolution” and the company has modified its phones to display a “5G E” connection. AT&T’s web site says : “5G Evolution is our first step on the road to 5G. We’re starting by enabling faster speeds on our existing LTE network—up to 2x faster than standard LTE.” So, this isn’t actual 5G,...

The evolution of Building Information Modeling: optimizing productivity, costs, and energy efficiency

With 2.5 billion people expected to move into urban areas with the next few decades, we’re going to need to construct over 10,000 buildings a day to house them. Now, imagine the environmental impact of all these people and all this construction. Did you know that 30% of all waste going to landfills is created by the construction sector? Even worse, buildings today are consuming 40% of our energy and producing a full third of GHG emissions. Not only must design and construction be faster and more efficient to keep up with demand, buildings must become far more energy efficient. For everyone involved in the design and construction of buildings, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly being adopted worldwide to help improve productivity while reducing errors and cutting costs. BIM is also helping design more efficient buildings by integrating Building Energy Modeling (BEM) at the design stage. In this two-post series, we’ll first look at the advancements that BIM technolog...
