EFF: Internet Publication of 3D Printing Files About Guns: Facts and What’s at Stake

Internet Publication of 3D Printing Files About Guns: Facts and What’s at Stake When it comes to guns, nearly everyone has strong views. When it comes to Internet publication of 3D printed guns, those strong views can push courts and regulators into making hasty, dangerous legal precedents that will hurt the public’s ability to discuss legal, important, and even urgent topics ranging from mass surveillance to treatment of tear gas attacks. Careless responses to 3D-printed guns, even those that will do little to limit their availability, will have long-lasting effects on a host of activities entirely unrelated to guns. In its responses to 3D printed guns, the U.S. Department of State and state Attorneys General have sought to brush aside the legal protections that ensure your right to dissent and to publish technological information and software for privacy and other purposes. That’s why we’re working to make sure that 3D printing cases don’t set precedents that chip away at your f...

3 Ways to Make Your Commercial Real Estate a Destination

Image
Working on commercial real estate, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about buildings and what makes a commercial building attractive to tenants. To answer the question, I think we can take some queues from destination retailers. For example, why would someone go to a retail store these days when products are at our fingertips online? Or, why would someone make the long drive to a destination retailer when they could easily purchase from the comfort of home? As commercial office buildings lose tenants, workers move to home offices, and millennial workers upend the expectations of the traditional workplace, real estate professionals and investors are asking themselves some of these same questions. How can they make their real estate or workplace a destination- a place where people want to go to work? People enjoying a modern workspace. First, let’s look at the definition of Destination Retail: Destination Retail –  It refers to a particular retail store that the customer seeks ou...

Schneider Electric Intern Meets #SEGreatPeople

Image
Written by Guest Blogger Juhi Bhatnagar, Program Manager Intern It was a cool spring evening in 2018 when I landed in Boston, wide-eyed and bushy tailed, looking forward to three months of learning in a new city. This would be my first foray into technical management and I was eager to get started. I joined Schneider Electric as a Program Manager intern with the Industry Business Unit, where I would manage two projects while learning from the people around me. Everyone at Schneider Electric gave me a warm welcome and eased me into my internship. I lost my way inside the building on my first day (on more than one occasion) and people walking by me stopped to point me in the right direction. I noticed early on that the people were comfortable interacting with one another and they made an effort to include me in their conversations as well. My onboarding process was effortless and I met three other incoming interns during my orientation. We exchanged stories on how we had got there a...

A Faster, Cost Effective Way to Deploy Pods of IT Racks in Data Centers

Image
As a Senior Research Analyst for Schneider Electric’s Science Center , I have the privilege to observe and work with our system design and application engineers daily. I am always inspired and impressed with their creativity and endless search to make things better, be it by: stronger performance, lower cost, greater efficiency, etc. Our competitive marketplace makes continuous improvement necessary, of course. The Science Center is part of the CTO Office. We exist sort of as a neutral party to test and verify the system design and performance claimed by the Lines of Business. We use our quantitative research to develop best practices on how to plan, design, operate, and maintain data centers. And we typically publish that research for the public as free White Papers and TradeOff Tools . A recent example of this type of work involved our new IT rack pod frame called, HyperPod . It’s a free-standing support structure designed to provide air containment to various shapes and sizes of...

Smart motors and their applications in today’s industries

The requirement for machine control has become quite significant in today’s day-and-age, where technology has become prominent due to the sheer number of applications enabled by this service. The industries of today can’t even imagine functioning without the proper implementation of the latest innovations that have revamped business functioning as we know it. Even something so simple as the concept of servo motors has been augmented to the extent that was previously considered to be both impossible and unnecessary. To get into the concept of smart motors and how they’ve become a prominent aspect of the business, one needs to first take a look at the idea of advanced process control and how it has been propelled through the judicious application of the latest technology. The advent of the digital age has allowed for greater control over all the mechanical aspects involved in a particular piece of machinery, and for good reason – it’s become all the more important for industries to ke...

SCADA Explained: Everything You Need To Know

Technology is developing quite rapidly in today’s day-and-age, which mandates the need for industries to figure out what exactly can be done to optimise these business processes. One of the best ways to achieve this goal is going for SCADA software, which is seeing widespread adoption across multiple industries, due to the ease in management afforded by adopting this service. SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. It’s a system that allows for greater control and monitoring over the processes involved in a business and its functioning. Through a smart combination of up-to-date technologies and innovations, this software will essentially allow businesses to streamline and augment the management process by aiding your supervisory efforts and simplifying them by a considerable extent. It doesn’t take an expert to state that these services will prove to be quite beneficial for your business, but if you still want to know exactly how this particular piece of sof...
