EFF: EFF Tells the FTC Why We Need Better Competition and Consumer Protection Policies for Tech Companies

EFF Tells the FTC Why We Need Better Competition and Consumer Protection Policies for Tech Companies The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is wondering whether it might be time to change how the U.S. approaches competition and consumer protection. EFF has been thinking the same thing and come to the conclusion that yes, it is . On August 20, we filed six comments with the FTC on a variety of related topics to tell them some of the history, current problems, and thoughtful recommendations that EFF has come up with in our 28 years working in this space. Back in June 2018, the FTC announced it was going to hold hearings on “competition and consumer protection in the 21st century” and invited comment on 11 topics. As part of our continuing work looking at these areas as they intersect with the future of technology, EFF submitted comments on six of the topics listed by the FTC: competition and consumer protection issues in communication, information, and media technology networks; the ...

EFF: Giving Privacy Badger a Jump Start

Giving Privacy Badger a Jump Start Giving Privacy Badger a Jump Start: Teaching new Badgers to block from the get-go When new users try Privacy Badger, they often get confused about why Privacy Badger isn’t blocking anything right away.  But that’s because Privacy Badger learns about trackers as you browse; up until now, it hasn’t been able to block trackers on the first few sites it sees after being installed. With today’s update,  however, new users won’t have to wait to see Privacy Badger in action.  Thanks to a new training regimen, your Badger will block many third party trackers out of the box. Install Privacy Badger What has changed? We haven’t changed how Privacy Badger works. Instead, we’ve given young Badgers a head start. For people who already use Privacy Badger, essentially nothing has changed. Privacy Badger still uses heuristics to learn what’s tracking you and to decide what to block. For new users,  Privacy Badger will already be train...

Internet of Things Technology Presents Big Opportunities for Electrical Contractors

Image
Internet of Things (IoT) technology presents business of all sizes with significant opportunities to cut costs while gaining valuable business intelligence. But it also relies on infrastructure that requires reliable power – thereby presenting an opportunity for electrical contractors. IoT at a glance: A big market getting bigger By most any measure, the IoT is big and getting bigger. Forbes published a collection of statistics that make the point crystal clear, including these: By 2020, the installed base of the IoT devices is forecast to grow to almost 31 billion worldwide. By 2025 the installed base of IoT devices will be over 75.4 billion devices. $6 trillion will be spent on IoT solutions between 2015 and 2020 according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The global IoT market is projected to grow from $2.99 trillion in 2014 to $8.9 trillion in 2020, attaining a 19.92% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). All that infrastructure and money is aimed at delivering benefits such as im...

The Future of Eco buildings with network connectivity explained

Image
The terminology Eco buildings can be used applied interchangeably with the green building designation. An eco friendly design focuses on lowering the demands on the environment. As a result of certain building characteristics its characteristics include:   Low energy usage reduced water usage, and carbon neutral The Eco Buildings are building project that works in the direction of conserving most of the natural environment around the project site. The development and construction promotes a healthy environment for all involved. It is inevitable that this infrastructure will not disrupt the land, water, resources and energy in and around the building. The avalanche of technology constantly brings forward more comprehensive and developed practices in creating greener structures. The benefits of green buildings are multifold, it ranges from environmental to economic to social. By adopting greener practices, one can leverage maximum advantage of environmental and economic perf...

How variable speed drives help in motor protection

Image
Variable speed drives branch out as a segment of motor controllers. The frequency of the drives is directly proportional to the speed of the motor. These drives are used to control the frequency (measured in RPM) to meet the requirements of the electric motor’s load. Variable speed drives help in motor protection by changing the speed of direct current of the motor as per the voltage applied to the armature, i.e. direct current motors allow the drive to change the speed by adjusting the shunt field current. The motor failure rate is conservatively estimated at 3-5% per year and goes to as high as 12% in mining and pulp and paper industry. It majorly happens because of three main causes, i.e., electrical, mechanical and environmental factors. However, apart from the downtime or loss of production, the operators also need to pay for repair or replacement and removal and installation. Variable frequency drives can operate as motor protection devices along with their role as motor spe...
