Five Sustainable Strategies Every CEO Should Pursue

Image
This article originally appeared on CNBC Sustainability is one of the highest priorities on today’s CEO agenda. Climate change is dramatically impacting the planet and creating new business risks. So how are companies responding to mitigating environmental damage and ensuring long-term resiliency through increased use of digitization ? With lessons from AEG, Entrade, Walmart and WWF, leaders should consider five key strategies: Strategy 1: Adopt a One Planet Mentality Companies leading on sustainability recognize that natural resources are finite — we only have one planet . This mindset drives companies to develop innovative ways to manage resources, including new products and services. Ultimately, this increases business flexibility, allows companies to rapidly adapt, and drives sustainable growth. Circularity The adoption of circular business practices is one key way in which companies can harness resiliency. By re-evaluating the way resources are consumed, products are made, ...

EFF: New Exemptions to DMCA Section 1201 Are Welcome, But Don’t Go Far Enough

New Exemptions to DMCA Section 1201 Are Welcome, But Don’t Go Far Enough We’re pleased to announce that the Library of Congress and the Copyright Office have expanded the exemptions to Section 1201 of the DMCA, a dangerous law that inhibits speech, harms competition, and threatens digital security. But the exemptions are still too narrow and too complex for most technology users. Section 1201 makes it illegal to “circumvent” digital locks that control access to copyrighted works, and to make and sell devices that break digital locks. Every three years, the Copyright Office holds hearings and accepts evidence of how this ban harms lawful activities. This year, EFF proposed expansions of some of the existing exemptions for video creators, repair, and jailbreaking. With this rulemaking, there will be more circumstances where people can legally break digital access controls to do legal things with their own media and devices: People who repair digital devices, including vehicle...

EFF: EFF Wins DMCA Exemption Petitions for Tinkering With Echos and Repairing Appliances, But New Circumvention Rules Still Too Narrow To Benefit Most Technology Users

EFF Wins DMCA Exemption Petitions for Tinkering With Echos and Repairing Appliances, But New Circumvention Rules Still Too Narrow To Benefit Most Technology Users Library of Congress Denied Petition for Exemption Permitting Repair of All Software-Enabled Devices Washington, D.C.—The Electronic Frontier Foundation won petitions submitted to the Library of Congress that will make it easier for people to legally remove or repair software in the Amazon Echo, in cars, and in personal digital devices, but the library refused to issue the kind of broad, simple and robust exemptions to copyright rules that would benefit millions of technology users. The Library of Congress, through its subsidiary, the Copyright Office, yesterday granted several new exemptions to Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ( DMCA ). Section 1201 makes it illegal to circumvent the computer code that prevents copying or modifying in most software-controlled products—which nowadays includes ev...

How Industrial Edge Applications are Driving Much Needed Manufacturing Productivity Gains

Image
Recent data shows that industrial productivity is currently stuck in neutral. According to the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics , labor productivity, during the current business cycle (which started in the fourth quarter of 2007), has grown at an annualized rate of only 1.1 percent. In essence, across many industries, a productivity ceiling has been reached. A new wave of industrial edge applications, however, that generate and process manufacturing machine data locally, now present a possible solution to this problem. Productivity numbers have reached this plateau because traditional technologies are imposing fundamental limits on how effectively workers can perform their jobs in the workplace. Most organizations have reached a productivity limit that will require a different fundamental set of work tools and new, more collaborative work approaches to overcome. Now, the search is on for new ways to improve industrial productivity. A recent trend which is helping t...

Secure Electrical Systems with Surge Protection Devices

With the wide acceptance of electrical system in all the offices and industries, it is evident that the power running through voltage lines are tremendous. The operation of high voltage devices like refrigerators, elevators or any heavy machinery may require a sudden or massive flow of electricity, thus causing fluctuation in the current and can majorly affect an industrial plant. The bad voltage can be a significant cause of damage to devices in the network. Therefore, it becomes essential to install surge protection devices . Energy management system ensures that the interconnected machinery works efficiently and lasts longer. To avoid damages due to electric surges, surge protectors are installed to counter high voltages. The device comes into play when the current in the circuit is fluctuating, at a value that is higher than the expected value. The surge protector provides a low-impedance path to ground for the current from a lightning strike or transient voltage and then restor...

SCADA – Automating The Industrial Process

Technology is developing at a rapid pace in today’s day-and-age, and it has become the need of the hour for industries to figure out the best course of action that can be taken to optimise their business processes. In this context, SCADA software is becoming one of the most prominent forms of technology around. It is seeing widespread adoption across a large swath of industries due to the ease in management afforded by adopting this particular service. SCADA is a shortened form of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. It is a system that allows for greater control and monitoring over most – if not all – processes involved in a particular business. Through a smart combination of impressive technologies like Programmable Logic Controllers ( PLC s) and a discrete Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller, this software will be able to streamline the management process by augmenting and simplifying the supervision process involved in a particular manufacturing unit. A SCADA ...

EFF: Oakland Privacy and the Fight for Community Control

Image
Oakland Privacy and the Fight for Community Control Many groups in the Electronic Frontier Alliance work to ensure that their neighbors have the tools they need to maintain control of their information. Others devote their efforts to community organizing or advocacy, assuring that authorities respect the civil and privacy rights of people in their community. For over four years, Oakland Privacy has been a notable example of the latter. Initially organizing as the Occupy Oakland Privacy Working Group, Oakland Privacy began meeting in July of 2013, with a mission to stop Oakland’s Domain Awareness Center (DAC). The DAC, first approved by the City of Oakland City Council as a port security monitoring system, was moving toward approval of a second phase by the Summer of 2013. Phase II would have expanded the DAC into a city-wide surveillance apparatus that would have combined feeds from cameras, microphones, and other electronic monitoring assets throughout the city. Local authorit...

Arc Flash Protection Benefits

Image
The first post in this series covered a new arc flash related standard, the 2018 edition of NFPA 70E . It has some changes, such as allowing the use of a permanently mounted test equipment, that will make life easier. What is not changing are the benefits of arc flash protection. In an arc flash, current goes where it is not intended. It may jump from one conductor to another. Alternatively, current may jump from a conductor to ground. For either of these to happen in switchgear, typically the dielectric breakdown strength of air must be exceeded, or about 3 kV/mm of air gap. This means that an arc across a centimeter might take tens of kilovolts. The actual value might be a tenth that because the shape of the arcing electrode influences the breakdown voltage. A rounded arc launch point will have a higher breakdown than a pointy one. Another factor that may lower the breakdown value is the insertion of a foreign object, like a metal tool, into the gap. If the arc path is through m...

Nurturing Sustainability by virtue Technology : GGITC 2017

Go Green in the City. Think Big . Think Green . Think Schneider Electric .           While cursorily screening our College’s digital Notice Board on one of the days, I saw a colorful notice with a link, this notice immediately caught my eye. It read “Go Green in the City 2017 – Think Big. Think Green. Think Schneider Electric”. Considering the current energy crisis, the world is ensnared into and being cognizant of Schneider Electric’s belief that ‘Access to energy is a Basic human right’, I thought that it would be something interesting. I delved more and found that, Go Green in the city is Schneider Electric’s flagship sustainability themed event for students at College. This competition is not just organization’s effort towards fostering innovation among students but also is a reinforcement of their commitment to Gender Diversity, it was difficult to believe that a pre-requisite to partake the competition was that at-least one of the two team...
