EFF: Judge Dodges Legality of NSA Mass Spying, Citing Secrecy Claims

Judge Dodges Legality of NSA Mass Spying, Citing Secrecy Claims EFF’s case challenging NSA spying, Jewel v. NSA, has come further than any case trying to end the government’s mass surveillance programs. Our clients have survived multiple efforts by the government to end the case, and they continue to push for their day in court. As a result, we’re no stranger to overcoming legal obstacles thrown our way. The latest obstacle came Thursday, when the court hearing our long-running case challenging NSA spying ruled that the lawsuit should be dismissed on account of the government’s argument that to proceed further would jeopardize national security. Athough we are disappointed that the case was dismissed on the basis of the government’s state secrecy arguments, we are not surprised.   T he Justice Department insists that our legal fight against this spying is bound by a   Catch-22 : no one can sue unless the court first determines that they were certainly touched by the vas...

What to do with aging medium voltage switchgear?

Image
A major issue for industrial facilities are the impacts of aging medium voltage switchgear . Continuity of services , reliability and financial losses are all at risk, not to mention that the cost of downtime can be in the millions of dollars per hour. But more importantly, it can affect employee safety , where the cost of risk is incalculable. Regardless of the age of switchgear network and switchboards in a power system, the high-risk costs mean that reliable performance and proper maintenance are more critical than ever. Useful Life: A Relative Term The lifespan of switchgear often exceeds 20-25 years, which may be challenging to maintain, for example, with increasing difficulty to find spare parts. Engineers and  electrical distribution  stakeholders need to decide when it’s time to upgrade or when to replace aging equipment . What drives that decision? Safety? Electrical reliability? Rising maintenance costs? Or the need to upgrade technology? Here’s a common di...

Important features to look for when choosing the right Back-UPS

Back-UPS is a type of UPS that offers battery backup and guaranteed power. The device is capable of controlling any surges that occur in the electrical systems. The system might include air conditioners, wireless networks, computers, gaming consoles or any other electronic device. The electrical surges, voltage fluctuations, damaging surges and spikes are the primary reason why electrical devices breakdown. Schneider Electric India offers a range of domestic and industrial UPS and Back UPS which offers the following features: Reliable Battery: Automatic Self Test: The battery runs an automatic self-test to detect the faults in the device. The test is done to detect if the battery needs to be replaced. Battery Failure Notification: It generates a warning notification on fault analysis. This helps in running timely maintenance checks in the system and do a preventive check of all the components. Intelligent Battery Management: The modern day UPS is capable of maximizing battery p...

Data Center Operations Optimized Like a Race Car Team

Image
Over the course of visiting some of the more than 100 data centers Schneider Electric manages, I’m continually struck by this idea: running an effective data center operations team involves many of the same elements that go into running a successful performance race car team. At a base level, both endeavors require the following: Collecting lots of data in real time Analyzing the data to determine potential courses of action Effectively communicating with stakeholders A highly trained human being to take in data and make decisions On the front lines: pit crews and operations teams   Let’s first look at the most visible folks on a race car team. Whether you’re talking Formula One or NASCAR, the setup is much the same. A successful team has a crew of experienced, proficient mechanics who tune the engine and generally do whatever is required to maximize the car’s speed and safety. The team also includes a pit crew that specializes in changing tires, adding fuel and making ...
