Digitization of electric utilities – Meralco’s innovative approach

Image
Ferdinand Balagtas from  Meralco  joined us in Singapore to share the next steps in their   digitalization   journey. Already using smart technology and testing  microgrids  to generate an “explosion of information,” it is  how  they use this information that will shape the future of their  electric utility  in the Philippines. In the face of climate change, “this will give us direction and guide us on how we are going to improve to meet the changing customer demands, enhancing the performance of our distribution system.”   Watch this panel to hear from business leaders at top electric utilities. From the left to the right: Meralco’s Ferdinand Balagtas, Provincial Electricity Authority’s Pongsakorn Yutthakovit, South Australia Power Networks ‘ Mark Vincent and Schneider Electric’s Carola Puusteli . Ensure Short Circuit Withstand Strength in Low Voltage Electric Switchboards

Image
The initial post in this series covered the reasons behind IEC 61439 , which when followed ensures the quality of low voltage electric switchboards . Other posts how shown how the standard applies to testing of protection devices , creepage and clearance distances , and insulating materials . In this post, I’ll discuss the importance of short-circuit withstand strength and how to verify it, as specified in the standard. First, let’s cover the importance of short-circuit withstand strength. A short circuit can have serious consequences: property damage, injury and even loss of life. What’s more, a fire that results from a lack of short circuit safeguards can tie up firefighting resources. For instance, a blaze at a mall in New Delhi required nine fire tenders to bring under control. It was not worse in terms of loss of life because it happened at night. Now, a big fire may well have started with a small short circuit. That short circuit and the energy it released, in turn, could have...

Blockchain: 3 Reasons It’s Good for Financial Services

Image
Wall Street is all abuzz about blockchain- especially for banking and financial services.  Some consider it a threat while others see it as an opportunity to digitize the industry.  Still, lots of people are talking about it but many don’t even know what it is- let alone why it could be good for financial services. So let’s start with the definition.  According to Investopedia.com, blockchain is a “public ledger of all cryptocurrency transactions.  Developed for Bitcoin, its uses are spreading to all sorts of commercial applications.” An even more detailed definition by Fortune Magazine describes blockchain as “a way to structure data and the foundation of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.  This coding technology involving concatenated blocks of transactions – allows competitors to share a digital ledger across a network of computers without need for central authority.” Essentially, blockchain’s peer to peer technology eliminates the need for third party cleari...
