EFF: California Should Provide Public Access to Police Body Cam Footage

California Should Provide Public Access to Police Body Cam Footage These days, more police officers are using body-worn cameras, or BWCs. That’s why it’s more important than ever we have clear guidelines around the public’s right to access those police recordings. To that end, EFF is supporting [ PDF ] A.B. 748, a bill currently pending in the California legislature that would mandate public access to police recordings of so-called “critical incidents.” In 2015, following high-profile police shootings of civilians, a survey found that 95 percent of large police departments were planning to use them in the future. Body-worn cameras can serve a valuable function in increasing police accountability. Without proper policies, though, they can also be use to surveil people who interact with police, or those who may not be aware that filming is taking place. BWCs can’t function as a proper police accountability tool unless the public has a clear right of access to police video and audio...

EFF: CLASSICS Is the Future of Assaults Against the Public Domain

CLASSICS Is the Future of Assaults Against the Public Domain January 1, 2019 will be the first time in twenty years that works in the United States will once again join the public domain through copyright expiration . A growing public domain means more access to works and the ability of other artists to build on what came before. And as we get closer and closer to finally growing the public domain, big content holders are going to push harder and harder to lock it all down again. CLASSICS is the first step in that direction. CLASSICS is a very bad bill that has been bundled with the largely-good Music Modernization Act (MMA). That bundle was passed in the House of Representatives and is currently sitting in the Senate . The original text of MMA created a new way to compensate songwriters and publishers for music played on digital services. CLASSICS, on the other hand, took advantage of a messy and confusing situation—not unusual in copyright—in order to let labels find new ways...

I contributed to a product used by several clients and worked on the feature from start to finish. I was also named the Intern Ambassador for my location where I organized a networking event for all the interns to meet the managers in their building. I’ve learned a lot from the lovely people here and enjoyed my summer immensely!” – Juhi Bhatnagar Program Manager Intern “My internsh...

Schneider Electric: The Powerhouse for Healthcare IoT

Image
Few of us realize that the Apple Watch on your wrist telling you your heart-rate, the IV in somebody’s arm, and the electrical panels in hospitals are all intertwined within the Internet of Things (IoT). These are just a few of Gartner’s predicted 20.4 billion connected things that will be in use by 2020, and BI Intelligence predicts that by the same year, the installed base of healthcare IoT devices will reach 646 million. What do these numbers mean, exactly? That healthcare will account for 25% of the IoT market. The era of IoT has allowed Schneider Electric to essentially act as a virtual hub, linking what is most important in the healthcare realm: patient care and satisfaction. In hospitals, healthcare IoT or also commonly referred to as the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) is used to improve daily operations, patient care, and ultimately the patient experience. There is truly no limit to the benefits that Healthcare IoT can bring. In a recent article written by Solution ...

The Life and Times of a Summer Intern

Image
Written by guest blogger, Emma Trappe All of the Neponset Plant Summer Interns in Foxboro, MA My first day as an intern with Schneider Electric in Foxboro, Massachusetts, consisted of a whirlwind of faces, names, and expectations for what my internship would look like in the coming weeks. Though I started off the day by arriving at the wrong building entrance, my day only went up from there. Within the first few hours I met my direct manager, my project manager, and my desk space. I was then taken on a tour of the facility. With a fancy coffee machine and a laptop to break in, I began my workday in earnest. My Manufacturing Internship Experience I was officially hired as a Manufacturing Intern under Don Guilmain, working with Anthony Chaussie and Courtney Slater in Pressure for my first-time study project. As an intern, I picked up various jobs during my stay however. I went on to perform time studies focusing on cost and process improvements in another department, assisted with...

How Schneider Electric Has Shown Me that Life is On

Image
Written by Guest Blogger, Agnes Broden, Sustainability Intern in Washington D.C. The other day I found myself walking the halls of the Longworth Building on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., carefully listening to the meeting taking place through my headphones while scrambling notes down in my book. I browsed the doors, looking for the room where I was meeting the environmental representative of a U.S congressman. My ninth congress meeting in two days. At 3:59pm I hung up the call, entered the room and introduced myself to the girl at the front desk. “Hello, my name is Agnes Broden, and I am here from Schneider Electric.” If you had told me three years ago when I stepped off the plane from my home country Sweden, that I would be running meetings on Capitol Hill, discussing climate policy with some of the largest companies in the world, and putting together sustainability projects from scratch for a company with over 140,000 employees across the world, I would have called you craz...

The role of predictive maintenance in modern technology

Image
The sheer pace at which technology has developed since the turn of the century is truly a tale to behold. One couldn’t have imagined just a few years back that we would become so technologically advanced in such a short span of time, and yet everything that we thought to be impossible has become the norm in the modern age. However, the prevalence of technology in all shapes and forms mandates the need for a system to be set in place that can manage these innovations and see to it that they function as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Take the example of a traffic light – it’s a system that most of us tend to take for granted, but if even one such light happens to fail, then the end result will be chaos on the streets. At the same time, one can’t expect human beings to keep track of all this technology. Errors can be made, which will lead to further problems down the line. This is where the system of predictive maintenance comes into play – by ensuring that potential errors and ...

How Smart UPS amplifies the system of power distribution

As technology becomes more and more prominent in our lives, the need for power sources that don’t falter becomes the need of the hour. After all, our dependence on certain gadgets and appliances mandates the need to set up a source that ensures the continuous and uninterrupted distribution of power at all times. This is exactly what the system of a smart UPS tries to achieve. By gauging the current level of power supply and seeing to it that any future outages are taken into account, the problems that might arise due to a brief power outage can be mitigated substantially, if not taken care of altogether. This will allow for a reliable system of power management to be set in place that will see to it that any forms of technology that require a constant, unwavering source of power are not negatively affected due to any fluctuations in the power source. Thus, this technology will enable a smooth and uninterrupted functioning of these forms of technology – a requirement that needs to b...
