Uncovering Opportunities: Changing how we think about Energy

Image
If someone asked you to name the top challenge presented by urbanization and our escalating world population, what would you say? One answer could be: the ever-increasing need for energy – which is one of the most basic dilemmas of modern life. But with the right approach, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity. Urbanization: In search of a better life Global population reached 2.5 billion by the 1950s. Today, we’ve hit 7 billion and expect an increase to 10 billion in the second part of this century. What’s more, drawn by the chance for a better, more modern way of living, people continue to move to cities, in both mature and developing economies. In fact, the rate of urbanization has increased from 29% in 1950 up to 49% today, and predictions show it will reach 67% by 2050. This represents a potential of 2.5 billion additional urban dwellers by 2050, a migration never experienced in the history of mankind. And every one of those families will need power in their homes and ...

How Renewables and Efficiency Measures Will Help Colo’s Meet Burgeoning Energy Demands

Image
Colocation companies are facing a period of tremendous opportunity for growth, but that same growth is forcing them to meet some serious challenges around energy use – for the sake of their own businesses as well as the planet. Those were some of my key takeaways from the recent International Colo Club event hosted by Schneider Electric in London. The event enables colocation companies to gather, learn about the latest trends in data center technology, tackle business issues, and compare notes. We’ve been hosting this event for the past few years in various locations – Paris in 2016, Miami in 2015 – and it never fails to deliver eye-opening discussion. The London edition featured talks from Schneider Electric executives along with insights from industry experts including venture capitalists and market analysts on topics including mergers and acquisitions and geographical dynamics. We also heard from a Gartner analyst who helps enterprise customers manage procurement of colo space. A...

EFF: A Step in the Right Direction: House Passes the Cyber Vulnerability Disclosure Reporting Act

A Step in the Right Direction: House Passes the Cyber Vulnerability Disclosure Reporting Act The House of Representatives passed the “Cyber Vulnerability Disclosure Reporting Act” this week. While the bill is quite limited in scope, EFF applauds its goals and supports its passage in the Senate. H.R. 3202 is a short and simple bill, sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), that would require the Department of Homeland Security to submit a report to Congress outlining how the government deals with disclosing vulnerabilities . Specifically, the mandated report would comprise two parts. First, a “description of the policies and procedures developed [by DHS] for coordinating cyber vulnerability disclosures,” or in other words, how the government reports flaws in computer hardware and software to the developers. And second, a possibly classified “annex” containing descriptions of specific instances where these policies were used to disclose vulnerabilities in the previous year, le...

Our youth are our nation’s critical asset, they represent the future that a nation is building for itself. The young are the store house of aspirations, unbridled enthusiasm, raw energy and the passion to achieve goals, big or small. It is therefore important that the youth are provided a robust platform in terms of quality education, skill development and career opportunities so that their combined vision and efforts take the nation forward. Unlike some of the developed nations that are faced with an ageing population, India is blessed with demographic dividend. According to statistics, more than 50% of India’s 1.324 billion is below the age of 25 and by 2020, the average age of an Indian will be only 29 years. If handled well, this demographic dividend will go a long way in ensuring that India clocks strong economic growth year-after-year, takes the high table in the global pecking order and accelerates its shift from a developing to a developed nation. However, some key challenges ...
