Taking Heart, My Meaningful Purpose at Schneider Electric

Image
Written by guest blogger Jessica Staggs Most people remember important dates in their lives; birthdays, wedding anniversaries, work anniversaries, the birth of their children, etc.  One day that changed my life forever and one that I will never forget was May 17, 2014 because it was the day I found out I was a “heart mom.” Adelyn’s Story My oldest daughter Adelyn was born on May 16, 2014.  We had a relatively easy pregnancy and delivery and had no reason for concern.  During her hospital newborn screen, the on-call pediatrician noticed a slight heart murmur, and although he didn’t seem concerned, he ordered an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to be safe. After Adelyn had been in testing for about an hour, the pediatric cardiologist broke the devastating news to us; Adelyn was in the NICU and was being transferred to another hospital to undergo major open-heart surgery within her first week of life (her heart was the size of a walnut!).  He said it would ...

EFF: Hearing Wednesday: Can Criminal Defendants Review DNA Analysis Software Used to Prosecute Them?

Hearing Wednesday: Can Criminal Defendants Review DNA Analysis Software Used to Prosecute Them? California Appeals Court to Hear Arguments on Defense Review of DNA Analysis System Fresno – On Wednesday, May 22, at 9 am, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will argue that criminal defendants have a right to review and evaluate the source code of forensic DNA analysis software programs used to create evidence against them. The case, California v. Johnson , is on appeal to a California appeals court. In Johnson , the defendant was allegedly linked to a series of crimes by a software program called TrueAllele, used to evaluate complex mixtures of DNA samples from multiple people. As part of his defense, Johnson wants his defense team to examine the source code to see exactly how TrueAllele estimates whether a person’s DNA is likely to have contributed to a mixture, including whether the code works in practice as it has been described. However, prosecutors and the manufacture...

Getting up to Speed on 5G Strategy and Micro Data Centers with Steven Carlini of Schneider Electric

Image
Everywhere I go, it seems that people are talking about 5G . I wanted to find out more about the specific role of micro data centers in 5G so I sat down with Steven Carlini , our Vice President of Innovation and Data Centers. Steven is responsible for developing integrated solutions and communicating the value proposition for Schneider Electric’s data center segment. I knew he’d have a wealth of timely insights on the topic and he didn’t disappoint. Here is part of our conversation. What is your definition of micro data centers? I would classify micro data centers as two or less IT racks, where a massive amount of computing power or storage can be managed. Today, we have micro data centers as small as 6U that can hang on a wall or even be put in a ceiling! I see micro data centers as a critical extension of cloud data center architectures to reduce latency and add redundancy in a hybrid cloud environment. These micro data centers are a key building block. However, because they are s...

EFF: TOSsed Out: Highlighting the Effects of Content Rules Online

TOSsed Out: Highlighting the Effects of Content Rules Online Today we are launching TOSsed Out , a new iteration of EFF’s longstanding work in tracking and documenting the ways that Terms of Service (TOS) and other speech moderating rules are unevenly and unthinkingly applied to people by online services. As a result of these practices, posts are deleted and accounts banned, harming those for whom the Internet is an irreplaceable forum to express ideas, connect with others, and find support. TOSsed Out continues in the vein of Onlinecensorship.org , which EFF launched in 2014 to collect reports from users in an effort to encourage social media companies to operate with greater transparency and accountability as they regulate speech. TOSsed Out will highlight the myriad ways that all kinds of people are negatively affected by these rules and their uneven enforcement. Last week the White House launched a tool for people to report incidents of “censorship” on social media, following...

Downstream Evolution: National Oil Companies and US Players Going Big

Image
The recent oil crisis accelerated the focus on the downstream value chain. National Oil Companies (NOCs) are rapidly adapting their strategy by investing in refining and petrochemical complexes both at home and abroad. The goal is threefold: to meet the rising domestic demand, to hedge against oil price volatility by accessing the products margin and finally, to secure future crude customer base through overseas investment in a market with increasing supply from unconventional sources. This is ever more crucial in a transitioning energy mix, as petrochemicals would still remain a growing sector. Historically, the downstream capacities were built by International Oil Companies (IOCs) in the developed countries. However, with emergence of developing countries in Asia and the economic growth in the Middle East, NOCs have taken the front seat to build the new capacities at home, signaling a “production and processing proximity” approach. Additionally, Middle Eastern NOCs invest in downstr...

EFF: EFF Project Shows How People Are Unfairly “TOSsed Out” By Platforms’ Absurd Enforcement of Content Rules

EFF Project Shows How People Are Unfairly “TOSsed Out” By Platforms’ Absurd Enforcement of Content Rules Users Without Resources to Fight Back Are Most Affected by Unevenly-Enforced Rules San Francisco—The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today launched TOSsed Out , a project to highlight the vast spectrum of people silenced by social media platforms that inconsistently and erroneously apply terms of service (TOS) rules. TOSsed Out will track and publicize the ways in which TOS and other speech moderation rules are unevenly enforced, with little to no transparency, against a range people for whom the Internet is an irreplaceable forum to express ideas, connect with others, and find support. This includes people on the margins who question authority, criticize the powerful, educate, and call attention to discrimination. The project is a continuation of work EFF began five years ago when it launched Onlinecensorship.org to collect speech takedown reports from users. “La...
