Election Security Bill Without Paper Records and Risk Limiting Audits? No Way. The Senate is working on a bill to secure election infrastructure against cybersecurity threats, but, unless amended, it will widely miss the mark. The current text of the Secure Elections Act omits the two most effective measures that could secure our elections: paper records and automatic risk limiting audits. Cybersecurity threats by their very nature can be stealthy and ambiguous. A skillful attack can tamper with voting machines and then delete itself, making it impossible to prove after the fact that an election suffered interference. Paper records ensure that it is possible to detect and quickly correct for such interference. Automatic audits ensure that such detection actually happens. EFF & Privacy Coalition Oppose Efforts to Undo New California Data Privacy Law California enacted a data privacy law less than two months ago, and business groups already are urging the legislature to gut some of its most important protections. EFF and our privacy allies are fighting back. On June 28, California enacted the Consumer Privacy Act (S.B. 375). It seeks to protect the data privacy of technology users and others by imposing new rules on companies that gather, use, and share personal data. As we have explained , while this law is a step forward, it also has important flaws that must be fixed. The law does not go into effect until January 2020, which means privacy advocates like EFF have 18 months to fix those flaws and strengthen it.
