EFF: EFF To Texas AG: Epson Tricked Its Customers With a Dangerous Fake Update

EFF To Texas AG: Epson Tricked Its Customers With a Dangerous Fake Update If you’ve ever bought an inkjet printer, you know just how much the manufacturers charge for ink ( more than vintage Champagne !) and you may also know that you can avoid those sky-high prices by buying third-party inks, or refilled cartridges, or kits to refill your own cartridges. The major printer manufacturers have never liked this very much, and they’ve invented a whole playbook to force you to arrange your affairs to suit their shareholders rather than your own needs, from copyright and patent lawsuits to technological countermeasures that try to imbue printers with the ability to reject ink unless it comes straight from the manufacturer. But in the age of the Internet, it’s possible for savvy users to search for printers that will accept cheaper ink. A little bit of research before you buy can save you a lot of money later on. Printer companies know that openly warring with their customers is a b...

Solving the LV vs MV dilemma in motor management for mining

Image
(This blog is part of our series on  motor management  which covers various aspects of motor integration in an electrical network and the industrial process.  See end of blog for other topics) I am often asked whether LV or MV is a better solution for connecting motors. As it turns out, answering this question is not just a comparison of direct costs related to equipment investment. It also concerns indirect costs such as for personnel training, habits of using LV or MV for a certain range of motor power, availability of suitable voltage levels, as well as the impact on parallel loads and overall electrical system. In the 100-800 kW range both LV and MV connection levels are feasible, and this is a range where established practices are just as important as some of the technical and economic arguments. A few comparisons Below are the results of several recent analyses I made comparing LV and MV equivalents for motors in the 100-800 kW range.  More detailed inform...

Smart services get the most from smart circuit breakers

Image
Over the course of this blog series we’ve discussed the many benefits of smart circuit breakers for applications as diverse as wind turbines, industrial plants, hospitals, data centers, and large commercial buildings. As part of a fully digitized power distribution system, these intelligent, connected devices go beyond traditional protection functions to help facility teams simplify routine maintenance , avoid outages , and restore power faster if an outage occurs. In addition, embedded energy metering helps meet new efficiency standards , while Ethernet connectivity makes sure power, energy, and breaker diagnostic data is always available to everyone that needs it. The robust and flexible design of the most advanced breakers enables adaptation to any harsh or demanding environment, now and in future. All of these capabilities are essentially for helping facility teams improve safety, reliability, and uptime while reducing energy and maintenance costs, extending equipment life, ...
