EFF: EFF Urges Governor Brown to Sign Sensible California Law Imposing Stricter Requirements for DNA Collection From Minors

EFF Urges Governor Brown to Sign Sensible California Law Imposing Stricter Requirements for DNA Collection From Minors When the San Diego police targeted black children for DNA collection without their parents’ knowledge in 2016, it highlighted a critical loophole in California law. The California State Legislature recently passed a new bill, A.B. 1584 , to ensure that law enforcement cannot stop-and-swab youth without either judicial approval or the consent of a parent or attorney. The bill, introduced by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher, is now on Governor Jerry Brown’s desk. EFF has strongly supported this bill from the start and now urges the Governor to sign the bill into law.  DNA can reveal an extraordinary amount of private information about a person, from familial relationships to medical history to predisposition for disease . Children should not be exposed to this kind of privacy invasion without strict guidelines and the advice and consent of a parent, ...

EFF: Social Media Platforms Should be Accountable and Transparent About Content Removal, But DOJ’s Plan to Investigate Raises Concerns

Social Media Platforms Should be Accountable and Transparent About Content Removal, But DOJ’s Plan to Investigate Raises Concerns The Justice Department’s announcement yesterday that it will meet with states to discuss whether social media companies are “intentionally” stifling free speech represents a potentially dangerous new step in the wrong direction. Instead of focusing on making social media accountable and transparent, the Justice Department’s effort seems aimed at pressuring social media platforms to censor or promote speech in accordance with the government’s views of which speech it prefers. If the Justice Department is aiming at convincing state attorneys general to exercise their new powers under FOSTA , or worse, further undermine platforms’ ability to host our speech by making them liable for what we say, all of us who rely on social media platforms will lose out. We know that governmental censorship schemes almost always silence the less powerful, qu...

Accelerating technology and domain expertise are the recipe for IT/OT convergence in Oil and Gas

Image
As I discussed in my previous blog ( How much value digital transformation has created so far in the Oil & Gas Industry ), a debate is currently happening around which IIoT technology is contributing most, what are the most compelling use cases, and what are the digital value drivers accelerating the transformation. IT/OT convergence is one of the three trends shaping the digital landscape. The almost infinite power of Big Data, algorithms, networks, and cloud – together with domain expertise as the central pillar – complete the picture. The disruptive effect of the digital acceleration is yet to come, but the continuous improvement of cloud capabilities enhances the value of industrial software solutions Digital technologies have been around for decades, creating tremendous value since the beginning of automation in the 1970s and the software industry in the 1980s. Today, digital is now at a tipping point through the combined effects of a logarithmic reduction in IT costs and t...

Digital transformation and value creation for Oil and Gas at the IT/OT market convergence

Image
How much value has digital transformation created so far in the Oil & Gas industry? Which technology has contributed the most and what are the most compelling use cases? What are the digital value drivers and how to accelerate the transformation? These questions were debated at the O&G IIoT and Digital Conference which took place in Amsterdam in June. In this series of two blogs, I will take a closer look at the key points raised during the conference’s presentations and debates to shed light on the three key trends in today´s digital landscape that represent the opportunities and challenges for Oil & Gas players: IT players and platform focus on the IT/OT convergence market with disruptive value propositions for operations management, and push back traditional market boundaries The almost infinite power of Big Data, algorithms, networks, and cloud empowers OT providers to increase the value of their solutions in the fields of industrial software and robotics Doma...

Webinar: How Prefabricated Data Centers Help Colocation Providers Keep up With Demand for Capacity

Image
The colocation market is growing rapidly, with 451 Research predicting 7% CAGR in operational square footage globally through 2020. Clearly the opportunity is large for providers that can keep up with demand. Keeping up with demand, of course, is all about rapidly building out capacity. It would be easy if that 7% growth was spread evenly across the globe and timed evenly across the year but of course, that is not the way the real world works. Prefabricated data centers and/or modular components (delivered in 12 to 16 weeks; about 20% to 30% of the time it takes to build a data center from scratch) are a great tool to keep pace with the demand of your clients. Prefabricated Data Center Options and Benefits Modules come in various sizes and formats, depending on what customers need. It could be a modular room used to create data center space within a larger area such as a warehouse, a single skid with modules to add cooling, power or IT capacity to an existing data center, or a co...

Revamping the electrical power systems with resourceful components of today

Image
The current scenario of the electrical power system in India is unsettling. The renewable power plants constituted only 33.23% of total installed capacity. Ranked third amongst the world’s largest producers and consumers of power, India lacks adequate infrastructure for supplying electricity to all businesses, institutions or individuals. There is a need to revamp the existing elements of the electric power system. With technology advancing and pacing towards a sustainable eco-structure, it is essential to replace the existing components with resourceful units. The present-day scenario aims at developments that are leaps and bounds and exhibit dynamic scope of empowering other industries to grow. Some of the major electrical components pacing the process are: Electrical Switches: A variety of well-designed switches are available in the market. Choose the weatherproof sockets that are crafted to suit all extreme situations. The advancement in technology has helped companies introdu...

IIOT tools that can benefit Manufacturers: Variable Speed Drives

Image
In today’s competitive environment, a key differentiating factor has become the ability of machines to continuously adapt to changes required by end users. For OEMs, success hinges on their ability to build better performing machines in terms of production speed and output quality. Flexible architectures are necessary in order to comply with varying end user specifications and connectivity in terms of integration into different architectures is critical, as well as accommodating suitable infrastructure for the I ndustrial Internet of Things (IIoT) . Last but not least, machines must not compromise the machine operator’s safety. Addressing these challenges has become simpler thanks to recent enhancements on the variable speed drives (VSD). A VSD is an automation component that controls and regulates the speed and rotational force, or torque output, of an electric motor. These drives are altering the way mechanical movement-oriented processes such as packaging, material handling, mater...
