Advances in UPS Technology Deliver Cost-effective Protection for Edge Data Centers

Image
Big advancements are coming to 3-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and they all spell good news for organizations that operate critical data centers, including edge and micro data centers. These advancements – bringing greater efficiency and modularity to UPSs, along with a reduced footprint, improved connectivity and a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) – are adding value for anyone trying to save time, save money and lower management risk. This is just the right time for improvements to UPS technology because edge and micro data centers are becoming more crucial for organizations as they capitalize on trends like Internet of Things, mobile applications, and cloud computing; all of which require compute power at the network edge. Organizations across numerous verticals including retail, transportation, emergency lighting and light industrial, are finding that edge data centers have unique requirements for uptime availability, monitoring and servicing. Today’s UPSs are Smal...

Telco Central Offices are Being Transformed into the Edge to Power the Next Generation of Telco

Image
Next week I am attending Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to talk with customers about the next generation of telco – telco edge . Believe it or not, back in the day when using a telephone, there was a direct connection (wire) from your telephone, all the way to the telephone that you were calling. The technology is now adoringly called Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) and was the standard service offering from telephone companies from 1876 until 1988. The way it worked was simple: the wires went from your home or business phone to a central office where it was switched to a longer range wire to another central office and then switched to another wire to the other phone. It was powered by direct current (DC) voltage of -48V supplied by a power conversion system in the central office – this is why your house phone continued to work, even when there was a power outage at your house. These central office buildings are very close to users, located in every city and even every neighbo...

Ways to Improve Your Data Center Cybersecurity That Most People Don’t Think of Until It’s Too Late

It’s been well publicized that Microsoft fends off more than 7 trillion cyberthreats per day, and allocates over $1 billion each year to cybersecurity for its cloud data centers. While your data center may not see “trillions” of cyberthreats per day (and you may not spend in the “billions” to protect your company’s data), I bet that you have a comprehensive plan in place for the protection of your digital data from theft or corruption. Signs of Effective Data Center Cybersecurity Effective data center cybersecurity practices include: encrypted devices, firewalls, IDS/IPS, SIEM’s, SOC’s, stringent physical security, with documented procedures and clearly-defined business protocols. If you consider cybersecurity a priority, you may have secured the main entry point (core), put your IT systems into “clusters” and redundantly protect those, and hard connected IT devices through physical communications cables. Cybersecure conscious companies integrate executive oversight to their c-suite...
