Role of the SCADA Systems in water security
Water security is one of the upcoming issues we have, and it needs to be addressed on a priority basis. With the rapid transformation of technology, we have to see how it can be useful for a particular industry, in this case, the water industry.
Before talking about the role of SCADA in the water security systems, let us understand what SCADA system is.
SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. This system permits the control and careful monitoring of business and its related functions. Many people would have an ideal monitoring system in place, which can be further networked. This can be done through SCADA systems. SCADA software helps in monitoring of the entire system in a simple format.
The system is a right combination of updated technologies and innovative methods and allows to manage the business on a much more comfortable level.
In the water industry, the SCADA system builds a communication network which spreads out throughout the distribution system. The water industry can leverage SCADA systems to the best use of infrastructure and the existing resources. It helps in monitoring at the most vulnerable areas and assists in streamlining things of the water industry. SCADA helps in reporting the tiniest of security breaches and can indicate all the abnormalities. The installation of SCADA software helps in a lot of ways; for example, its security control will help in reducing the number of patrols and site inspection visits.
However, contrary to this fact, SCADA systems do not fit to all the networks. It depends upon the pump stations and therefore is not able to cover all the vulnerable areas.
SCADA systems is also well coordinated with the security systems, and therefore it does not require much effort to be on your toes all the time. SCADA systems are used in multiple industries such as traffic systems, electric power utilities and mass transit systems. In all these industries the types of equipment need to be closely monitored and carefully controlled automatically to avoid any confusions. SCADA systems can collect data from sensors as well as send control signals back to the equipment being monitored.
Functions
SCADA systems perform multiple functions. The three most basic services are monitoring control and user interface functions.
In the monitoring function, the data is collected and sent back to the central computer. whereas the control function gathers all the data from monitoring process, analyze it, process it and send it back to the equipment with the analyzed software program.
The user interface is often a large control room where individuals can monitor SCADA input and output responses in real time.
