EcoStruxure™ for Healthcare* solution enables Regionservice Skane to save $2.8 million annually
High maintenance costs, rising energy prices, and aging infrastructures can all have an impact on the quality of services delivered by hospitals and clinics. Regionservice Skane, the organization that manages 31 healthcare facilities across approximately 16 million square feet in the Skåne region of Sweden, is no stranger to these challenges.
Tackling energy and maintenance costs
Regionservice turned to Schneider Electric for its EcoStruxure for Healthcare* solution to develop a strategy that would reduce their energy and maintenance costs, reverse negative cost trends for its aging property portfolio and reduce energy consumption through better meter structuring and energy monitoring.
With high hopes of improving energy costs, Regionservice commissioned Schneider Electric in 2003 to uncover energy savings opportunities. The initial findings were promising. So, they partnered with Schneider Electric to upgrade 11 buildings, including Lund University Hospital, a 1.5 million square foot facility and the largest property in the project.
Energy performance guaranteed
The next phase of the project covered an additional 20 buildings. “By working with Schneider Electric, we have in a short time been able to carry out extensive improvements; improvements that the organization would never have been capable of on its own,” says Jonas Larsson, Energy Strategist at Regionservice.
Schneider Electric guaranteed 85% of estimated heat savings using the EcoStruxure for Healthcare* solution. EcoStruxure is Schneider Electric’s open, interoperable, IoT-enabled system architecture and platform, which delivers enhanced value around safety, reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and connectivity. By leveraging advancements in IoT, mobility, sensing, cloud, analytics, and cybersecurity, EcoStruxure connects products, edge control, apps, analytics and services to streamline control and visibility.
Major updates and improvements
During the first phase of the project, major updates included the installation of a new heat recuperation unit in the ventilation systems and refurbishing of district heating sub-stations, which resulted in increased savings for heating costs. Other improvements such as the replacement of valves and actuators, installation of new meters and water saving nozzles at tap outlets, as well as improvements to lighting using fluorescent lamps with voltage reduction systems aided in greatly reducing energy costs at the Lund University Hospital. In addition, Schneider retrained all maintenance personnel on the new systems and requirements.
Remarkable results
In the end, three buildings became Green Building-certified. And the energy project helped to improve indoor climate, reduce maintenance costs, and deliver annual savings of approximately $2.8 million which is now reinvested in healthcare services. Today, properties managed by Regionservice are visited by representatives of other regions seeking to learn more about energy savings.
